CURRICULUM STATEMENT OF INTENT
We have an inclusive curriculum which is challenging and stretching, with access to all learners. Our aim is to engage our children and inspire a thirst for knowledge as life-long learners.
Children develop knowledge and skills throughout a rich, broad and balanced curriculum. Our bespoke curriculum encourages creativity and each subject is valued. The Curriculum taught is in line with the statutory guidance as outlined in The National Curriculum, 2014. At the heart of the taught curriculum are the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. Our wider curriculum, covers all other National Curriculum subjects, including French.
In order to support the children to achieve the high expectations we set for them, we monitor their progress from their individual starting points and employ a range of teacher, peer and self-assessment strategies. Meaningful curricular links are made with the local community, visitors into school and through inspiring educational visits and residential trips. We expect our children to think deeply and critically, whilst being encouraged to be globally responsible citizens.
Within this structure, we ensure that there is a clear progression of knowledge and skills from Year 3 to Year 6, which enables all our children, including those with SEND, to access all areas of the curriculum in a purposeful manner. Alongside this, we liaise closely with our infant and secondary schools to build on acquired knowledge and further develop pupils in readiness for their next stage of education. We encourage our children to develop a passion for learning, being inquisitive, active and curious learners who are independently motivated.
In 2023, OFSTED commented specifically on our curriculum offer by saying the following:
- ‘All pupils experience a broad and engaging curriculum'
- 'Subjects are planned with equally high ambition and rigour.'
- 'The school strives to broaden pupils’ knowledge of the world. For example, in art and design, pupils’ learning takes them around the globe as they learn techniques inspired by Japan, India and a range of European artists.'
- 'Teachers help pupils to remember more by including frequent revision activities across the curriculum.'
- 'Bespoke support helps all pupils, including those who are disadvantaged, with their emotions to ensure they access the full curriculum alongside their peers.'
- 'Pupils oppose prejudice and promote equality. They learn to ‘politely disagree’.'
- 'Different faiths and cultures feature highly in reading and curriculum opportunities.'
Our children show respect for and tolerance of alternative perspectives through our school’s Christian values of friendship, trust, thankfulness and responsibility. We aim for our children to have a flexible and positive attitude towards life’s challenges, showing resilience and the ability to adapt and change in a responsible manner.
As children are at the heart of our decisions about the curriculum, their voice and feedback is valued and sought by subject leaders and senior leaders to assess the impact of our curriculum intent. We ensure our subject leaders have dedicated time to support staff, review and refine planning and monitor the quality of provision.
We will develop children’s aspirations for their future and self-help skills for maintaining their well-being, whilst broadening their horizons through new and memorable experiences.
