FRENCH
A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.” (National Curriculum)
INTENT
Our intent at Bartley is that we will develop children’s experience of modern foreign languages through the teaching of French as well as encouraging curiosity about other languages spoken around the world.
Our provision will enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in French with confidence. They will be able understand and respond to French speakers, both in speech and in writing. Whilst learning the language, the children will develop an understanding of the cultural differences between other countries in the world.
We will promote the importance of intercultural understanding.
Our aim is to give children a good base to build on for learning languages in secondary school, whether they continue to study French or an alternative language.
IMPLEMENTATION
We teach French once a week. The lessons follow a scheme and ensure that children are constantly recapping core language structures which are also displayed in class and referred to between lessons. Although most lessons focus on speaking and listening skills, the children also complete reading and writing activities in books.
