INTENT
At Bartley learning in physical education is underpinned by our school vision, values and the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum. During their time at Bartley, we want our children to build the foundations for lifelong participation in physical activity. Our children will experience a broad variety of physical and wellbeing opportunities through PE lessons, extra-curricular opportunities, break times and lunchtimes. From our curriculum, pupils will become physically educated through experiencing a range of activities that:
- Build their confidence, competence and enthusiasm to take part in physical activity
- Develop confidence and competence in a broad range of skills
- Through support and challenge, create resilient learners who independently take on different challenges from their starting point
- Enable a nurturing environment where our children are confident to collaborate, show respect and make positive contributions
- Our children are able to make informed choices about how to keep themselves healthy and how these choices can contribute to their emotional and mental wellbeing
IMPLEMENTATION
PE is an integral part of our curriculum; it is inclusive and engages all pupils by providing challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities.
- Children participate in two high quality PE lessons twice a week, these cover two different activities to cover sports/skills.
- Classes follow the PE long term planning to enable pupils to participate in a broad and balanced curriculum, ensuring the requirements of the National Curriculum are met.
- Teachers use and adapt planning and resources to ensure lessons across year groups show progression in line with the PE progression of skills document.
- All children participate in one swimming lesson per week during the summer term.
- Children are encouraged to organise and take part in games and activities at break time and lunchtime.
- We offer a broad range of extra-curricular clubs during lunchtimes and after school.
- The school annually celebrates its sports day event. Children engage in a wide range of competitive activities and sports. A strong emphasis is placed on sportsmanship and teamwork where children earn points for their house team.
- Teachers receive CPD training and the PE subject lead monitors and supports teachers throughout the year.
