EAL
EAL – English as an Additional Language
Having English as an Additional Language means that the language primarily spoken at home is not English. Speaking more than one language is often an advantage to a child and should be celebrated. At Bartley, we currently have children who speak a very wide range of languages including: Albanian, Bengali, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Czech, German, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Thai, Tagalog and Ukrainian.
New Arrivals
A child arriving in school with little or no English will be placed with a child in class who can model the best possible examples of spoken English. Children new to English may be quiet in class as they absorb and learn the language. English will often be first used in social situations in the playground as the child gains confidence before using spoken English in a classroom setting.
If you have any queries, or would like to receive communication from the school in your first language, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Pittman, the English as an Additional Language Coordinator by telephone – 02380 812173, or by email using admin.office@bartley.hants.sch.uk
